GRAND HAVEN, MI – A community composting site is now open for Grand Haven residents and businesses to drop off food scraps and pick up composted material.
The composting site on Harbor Island accepts food scraps and some garden materials. The city will use the donated materials to make composted soil additives the public can pick up from the same Harbor Island site.
The site is located on Third Street just north of the bridge and operating hours are dawn to dusk weekdays. It is in addition to a separate composting site in Grand Haven open to Ottawa County residents.
Accepted items are:
- Vegetable and fruit scraps
- Egg shells
- Flowers
- Coffee grounds
- Meat and bones
- Dirt, leaves and grass clippings (no sticks or brush)
- Seafood and shells
- Dairy, cheese and yogurt
Materials should be placed in the bins marked 1 and 2. Composted material in bin 3 can be taken home and added to soil for a nutrient-rich mixture.
The city’s composting site is separate from one operated at the Ottawa County Sustainability Center, 16850 Comstock Avenue. That site, open to individuals who live outside the city of Grand Haven, is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2-4 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and 8-11 a.m. on the fourth Saturday of every month.
That program requires the purchase of special composting bags for $5. More information is available at https://www.miottawa.org/Health/OCHD/eco.htm#compost.
